The Assembly of First Nations is defending a national panel on education after 230 First Nations, including the Nishnawbe Aski Nation, pulled out of the meetings.
The opponents claim the real intent of the panel is to help Ottawa create a one-size-fits-all education plan. But the AFN says the actual goal of the panel is to improve the education of children living in First Nation communities.
Currently less than half of children living in First Nation communities finish high school.
NAN Deputy Grand Chief Terry Waboose said NAN and the other First Nations in Ontario, Saskatchewan and Quebec will undertake their own education review.
That review will be submitted directly to the federal government and the AFN.
