PIKANGIKUM FIRST NATION -- Ontario Provincial Police say the scene investigation continues in the aftermath of a fatal fire on Tuesday at Pikangikum First Nation that killed nine people.

Police said the investigation is a very detailed and systematic process, calling the fire scene complex. It’s expected the investigation will take several days to complete, likely by the weekend’s end or early next week.

In a release issued on Friday, the OPP said the North West Crime Unit, the OPP’s criminal investigation branch, the forensic identification services unit, critical incident stress response officers and the provincial liaison team remain at the scene.

As well a coroner from the office of the regional supervising coroner and a forensic anthropologist from the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service is also investigating.

“Once all human remains have been located and removed from the scene, post mortems will take place at the officer of the chief coroner and forensic pathology services in Toronto,” the release reports.
