ISLE ROYALE NATIONAL PARK, Michigan — Describing it as "an unexpected winner," the prestigious Wall Street Journal has named Isle Royale National Park the best national park in the United States.
Situated about 40 kilometres south of Thunder Bay, the park is accessible only by boat or by seaplane, and had fewer than 30,000 visitors last year.
In sharp contrast, Yellowstone National Park attracted four million people in 2023.
The small crowds at Isle Royale was just one of the factors that earned it the number one spot.
It also scored highly for the quality of its hiking trails, access to campsites, and availability of other recreational activities on the island such as fishing, mountain biking and horseback riding.
The park has over 250 kilometres of hiking trails.
"This is true wilderness: A land of moose and wolves and the drama forever playing out between them," the WSJ stated.
Yellowstone National Park placed 10th in the rankings.
