THUNDER BAY – A charity aimed at providing hungry children with food when not in school has received $7,200 from Hillcrest Condos.
Isthmus Thunder Bay feeds more than 350 students each weekend and has been growing steadily for the past five years.
Half of the donation came from the auction of the metal colt that sat atop the former Hillcrest High School and the other half came from Hillcrest Condos, which matched the winning bid.
Isthmus Thunder Bay co-ordinator Amina Abu-Bakare said she needs three years’ worth of funding at a time, in order to keep the program going.
“Getting this money today means a lot for my kids,” Abu-Bakare said. “At this time a year, when the school year is winding down, we worry because we want to be able to keep the same kids from the next year.”
Hillcrest Condos partner Sharan Sohi believes kids are an important part of the community.
Abu-Bakare said she expects 850 local kids could benefit from the program, and she hopes to expand it if she can continue to get donations.
