'It's never too late': college celebrates academic upgrading

Students from Confederation College celebrated its annual Academic Upgrading Recognition Ceremony this Thursday

THUNDER BAY — "More doors could be open for me," Elsie McKay told Newswatch, moments after graduating from the Confederation College academic and career entrance (ACE) program.

"Its never too late to go back to school," she added.

The college held its annual academic upgrading recognition ceremony this Thursday, celebrating post-secondary students who have completed upgrading courses and achieved their ACE Certificate.

“It's nice to be able to acknowledge and be able to celebrate the accomplishments of our academic upgrading students,” said Michelle Salo president of Confederation College.

18 students received their ACE certificate, an Ontario Grade 12 equivalency, and a total of 192 students were recognized for their academic accomplishments, said a media release.

"Everybody got a certificate of some sort, whether they accomplished a level or actually graduated,” said Salo.

The program offers an individualized approach to learning and prepares students to meet their educational and/or employment goals. The program focuses on upgrading mathematics, communications, biology, chemistry, physics and computer skills.

The certificate gives students an Ontario Grade 12 equivalency diploma to apply for college and some universities. Many employers additionally accept the ACE certificate in place of a high school diploma.

“It's a great course, the teachers are really good and you work at your own pace, which is very nice, no one pushes you,” said Andre Lechance

The recognition day is a celebration of the academic year as Confederation college showcases accomplishments, dedication and success from students who are from Thunder Bay and the surrounding region.

"Its never too late to go back to school," said McKay.
