THUNDER BAY -- At about 1:20 a.m. on Tuesday, all emergency services responded to an auto/pedestrian collision at the intersection of Algoma and Waverley streets.

The investigation has shown that a 32-year-old male pedestrian was crossing Algoma Street on the hill just south of Waverley Street. According to police, the man was not in a crosswalk and walking at a diagonal angle to cross the street.

A northbound van driven by a 43-year-old male driver struck the pedestrian close to the roadway's midpoint.

The pedestrian was taken to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre by ambulance with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

The pedestrian has been charged under a city bylaw that is commonly referred to as jaywalking.
