THUNDER BAY — Long-range weather forecast models paint an encouraging picture for the beginning of summer in Thunder Bay.

Environment Canada says there's currently an 80 per cent likelihood that June will be warmer than normal.

If that proves to be true, it will end a five-month-long stretch of abnormally low temperatures in Thunder Bay.

The period from January to April was the coldest in the city since 1950.

With two days of data still to be compiled, May should also finish slightly cooler than the long-term average.

As of Monday morning, the daily maximum temperature has averaged 15.1 C, compared with the normal of 16.4.

Thunder Bay has also received 40 per cent more precipitation than it usually gets to this point in May, and more rain was expected on Monday and Tuesday.

Forecast models for next month currently point to the likelihood of below-normal precipitation in the city.
