Kashechewan sweeps Mushkegowuk Council elections

Members of Kashechewan First Nation took both the Grand Chief and Deputy Grand Chief positions in the Mushkegowuk election on Saturday.

Members of Kashechewan First Nation took both the Grand Chief and Deputy Grand Chief positions in the Mushkegowuk election on Saturday. 

Jonathon Solomon beat out four candidtaes to win the tribal council's top position with 480 votes, over 100 more than his closest challenger. 

Rebecca Friday won the Deputy Grand Chief election by an even larger margin, garnering 593 votes to beat runner-up Brent Edwards by almost 200 votes.

Both call Kashechewan home. 

Solomon succeeds former Grand Chief Lawrence Martin who was elected in 2014 following the death of Dr. Stan Louttit, a long-serving Grand Chief who passed away following a lengthy illness. Friday succeeds former Deputy Grand Chief Leo Friday. 

Newly elected Nishnawbe-Aski Nation Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler issued a release to congratulate them upon their victories. 

"Jonathon and Rebecca have served Kashechewan with distinction during their many years on council and have led their community through many crisis situations including several evacuations due to seasonal flooding," he said.

"I'm confident that the Mushkegowuk Nation will be well-served by their leadersehip and I look forward to wroking closely with them."

Mushkegowuk is one of seven tribal councils in the Treaty 9 and 5 Territory. It administrates education, finance, victim services, lands and resources, and employment and training depatments in Attawapiskat, Chapleau Cree, Fort Albany, Kashechewan, Missanbie Cree, Moose Cree, and Taykwa Tagamou First Nations.
