Kenora MP calls on Beyak to resign

Bob Nault says former Conservative senator is grossly mistaken in defending her misinformed views on Indigenous people.

KENORA, Ont. – Add Liberal MP Bob Nault to the list of politicians calling on Sen. Lynn Beyak to step down.

Nault said Beyak, the former member of the Conservative caucus who was booted out last week by Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer, is wrong in her comments about the impact of residential schools on Indigenous people.

“As I have previously stated, Senator Beyak is grossly mistaken as she continues trying to defend her misinformed views about Indigenous peoples and residential school survivors. There is absolutely no defense or justification for the harm and injustice she is causing,” Nault said in a release issued on Thursday.

“I remain steadfast in my support for survivors and Indigenous peoples throughout the riding and across the country. Senator Beyak’s severely misguided perspectives fly in the face of the government’s goal of reconciliation and only serves to further divide Canadians.”

Nault said as Kenora’s MP, a riding containing 42 Indigenous communities, Beyak’s decision to only publish letters of support for her views is unacceptable.

“Having finally been removed from the Conservative National Caucus by the Leader of the Conservative Party, Andrew Scheer, I strongly encourage Senator Beyak to seriously re-evaluate her capacity to represent her constituents and step down.”

Last year Beyak said some good came out of the country’s residential schools, adding later in 2017 that she thought Indigenous people should trade in their status cards for citizenship cards.
