Leadership of Kitchenuhmaykoosib InninuwugI First Nation is again making a stand against industrial development in their territory.
The remote far north community held a referendum this week, with 96 per cent of band members voting in favour of the KI Watershed Declaration.
The document applies to 13,000-square kilometres of lakes, rivers and wetlands around Big Trout Lake, and is meant to protect them from development.
The KI First Nation made headlines three years ago when six band leaders went to jail after blocking Platinex mining from drilling in that area.
