THUNDER BAY -- Dozens of keen children gave up their Sunday morning to look at math differently.

Students from Grades 1 to 12 gathered at Lakehead University to solve curriculum-based problems in the nation-wide Kangaroo Math Contest.

Kangaroo Math regional coordinator Christopher Chlebovec said introducing students to challenging math problems can make the subject enjoyable.

"We want to get kids involved and think about math from a point of view of fulfilment -- from solving problems as opposed to the anxiety," Chlebovec said.

"We want them to think outside the box but we want to promote development and involvement in mathematics."

An award ceremony will be held in late spring once the participants will be ranked on national and regional levels.

This year more than 4,000 students from all over Canada participated in the 10th annual Canadian Kangaroo Math contest.
