THUNDER BAY -- Leading a good life means staying positive, having healthy relationships and learning life skills.
That's what organizers of the new Leading a Good Life program being offered at Lakehead University this week are hoping a group of students will take away, getting participants to learn from the past to help to shape their future.
Students are learning about traditions through elders, community leaders, teachers as well as through the drum. Around 30 kids ranging from grades 6 to 9 are attending the first ever camp at Lakehead.
Aboriginal Educational Resource Teacher Anika Guthrie says even just a couple of days into the camp and they're already seeing the kids blossom. Throughout the week participants will learn how to make drums, traditional baskets and tee-pees. They'll also learn about the darker side of First Nations history.
Retired Police Officer George Couchie has been running programs like Leading a Good Life for 20 years and says getting to kids between the ages of 12 and 16 can make a huge impact on the path they take in their adult life.
