Lack of police volunteers a challenge for Santa Claus Parade

THUNDER BAY -- A co-chair of the annual Santa Claus Parade admits they're dealing with some challenges, but says the show will go on.

The Lakehead Rotary Club's Volker Kromm says with less than a month to go before the parade, they're experiencing a shortage of police volunteers to manage traffic and congestion along the route.

That issue, plus the high volume of businesses along Memorial Avenue, are causing organizers to re-think the parade route for this year.

Kromm says police have busy lives and don't always have time to volunteer.

But he adds that they have a good core of police volunteers and will be able to work with what they have.

Kromm says one option is shortening the route.

The parade is still set to go Nov. 17, and local groups are encouraged to register their floats.
