While every dog may have its day, most lakes don’t.
Luckily that’s not the case for one of the largest lakes in the world. On the third Sunday in July, cities all along the shores of Lake Superior gather to celebrate the water they drink from, play in and live by. Thunder Bay celebrated the day with the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority family picnic at Mission Island Marsh Conservation Area.
“We like to celebrate the fact that we help protect some of the shoreline along Lake Superior,” LRCA outreach coordinator Erin Moir said.
The conservation area, a former landfill, is just one example of how the LRCA protects the lake. People were hiking around the marsh, windsurfing on the lake and even doing some yoga Sunday afternoon. There were also children’s activities, food vendors and several organizations on display to celebrate.
“We really promote recreation on the lake and respect ting that and enjoying it for what it is. Even today, it’s beaming hot but the lake’s providing us with a nice cool breeze,” Moir said.
The celebration goes until 8 p.m.
