Plans for a lake interpretation centre in Thunder Bay might be moving up the shore and away from the city.

Members of Lake Superior Discovery Place have been invited by Nipigon mayor Richard Harvey to present their plans for a mutli-purpose facility. Nipigon may have a potential site for the project, originally planned around the Pool 6 site on Thunder Bay’s waterfront.

But after Thunder Bay city council decided the project was not a priority for the city until at least 2014, the group had to look elsewhere.

Chairwoman of the Lake Superior Discovery Place communications committee, Anne Turcotte, said the fact that Nipigon has shown interest in the project allows the group to continue their vision.

"We can’t sustain ourselves if nothing is happening," she told tbnewswatch.com Friday afternoon during a phone interview. "This allows us to grow."

Turcotte said the invitation from Nipigon doesn’t rule out the possibility of the facility to be built in Thunder Bay still.

Members of LSDP will present the plan to Nipigon council Dec. 21 at 7 p.m.
