THUNDER BAY -- Lakehead University and Confederation College are teaming up with Canadian Blood Services to find some much needed bone marrow donors.
Registration is open to students and the public. Potential donors must first take swabs of their cheeks. Their DNA is tested for a genetic marker compatible with a sick patient.
The DNA is kept until the donor is 60 years old in an international network of registries and it could take years before the donors genetic marker is compatible with a patient's.
According to Canadian Blood Services, at any given time, about 1,000 Canadians are in need of a stem cell transplant. Donor Registration continues Wednesday at Confederation College from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Note to Reader: This corrects an earlier version that featured an inaccurate donor clinic time. The Wednesday registration is set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Confederation College.
