Interest in Lakehead University is on the rise.

According to statistics released by the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre, 2.6 per cent more applications for the Thunder Bay school were received through Jan. 17.

In total, 4,288 applications to attend Lakehead were submitted, 109 more than in 2012.

The news was not all good.

While the overall numbers show an increase, students are asked to rank their top three preferred schools. Unlike 2012, when 1,102 people made Lakehead their primary choice, only 1,055 ranked them No. 1 for the 2013 fall semester, a 3.2 per cent drop. Second-choice numbers were up 5.4 per cent.

Laurentian, with a 23.3 per cent jump, and Ryerson, at 11.7 per cent, experienced the biggest jumps year to year.

York University in the Greater Toronto Area experienced the biggest drop, down 1.8 per cent.
