THUNDER BAY -- For just over 30 years the Lakehead Radio Control Car Club has been racing in Thunder Bay.
These days drivers can see the remote controlled cars rushing around the dirt track just off of Cumberland Street.
Vice-President Ben Reilly said it’s not just the ability to go fast that brings drivers out.
“It’s the competition part it,” Reilly said. “Along with all the friendships that are developed over it. Drivers helping drivers, helping new people that come it’s just a great experience.”
The club is open to racers of all ages in a variety of classes that will test the participants, like 9 year old Jaxon Bryan who just started racing last month.
“I’m just focusing on the race, trying not to crash, and I just try and get as many laps in as I can,” Bryan said.
Yoan Grenon has been racing since he was five and equates this to being in NASCAR.
“I like it cause I feel like I’m racing a real care,” Grenon said. “I’ve always wanted to race a real car, but I have to be 16 for that so I have to wait.”
For those interested in racing it doesn't cost much to get started according to Reilly.
The Lakehead Radio Control Car Club meets every Thursday and Sunday throughout the summer, and moves indoors to the basement of the Eaton's building during the winter months for year round race action.
