THUNDER BAY -- The number of trustees elected to the Lakehead District Public School Board will remain at eight for the municipal election to be held October 22, 2018.
The Education Act includes provisions for the number of elected members on school boards.
It sets the maximum at 22 and the minimum at five.
The Lakehead board's current number—eight—is based on a calculation formula contained in the Education Act.
However, boards are given authority to voluntarily reduce their number to no fewer than five, or to increase their number by one.
They may also declare a "low population area" within the district and have a trustee elected from that area, which could result in representation from the city being reduced by one.
At its meeting this week, the local board voted to continue the membership at eight, and to make no designation of a low population area.
