THUNDER BAY - Lakehead University is the third-ranked university of its kind in Ontario, and the top-ranked in northern Ontario, according to the latest rankings by Maclean's magazine.
Lakehead's position in the national rankings this year moves up to number nine among the 19 primarily-undergraduate schools across the country. That's two spots better than last year.
Provincially in the primarily-undergraduate category, Lakehead places right in the middle. It trails Trent and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, but surpasses Laurentian and Nipissing.
The rankings are based on 14 criteria ranging from student and faculty awards to student satisfaction, operating budgets and school reputations.
Lakehead topped the 19 Canadian schools in total number of research dollars, was second in citations and third in library acquisitions as well as scholarships and bursaries.
On the negative side, it was 15th for student/faculty ratio, 14th in student satisfaction, and 11th for reputation.
In a statement in response to the rankings, LU Provost and Vice-President Moira McPherson said "Rankings such as these are read around the world by prospective students and their families, as well as potential faculty and staff who are looking to work here."
She added that the Maclean's survey is just one of many ways in which a university can get a sense of how it's performing.
Last year Lakehead was named Canada's top research school in its category by Re$earch Infosource for the second straight year.
