THUNDER BAY -- A few hundred dollars could have saved a local landlord thousands of dollars in fines.
The owner of a May Street boarding house pleaded guilty to four violations of the Ontario Fire Code costing him $8,000 in fines.
“He certainly knows the rules with regard to the fire code and compliance with the fire code,” Thunder Bay Fire Rescue prevention captain Eric Nordlund said.
“He’s actually had fire code violations and charges toward those violations laid before.”
Nordlund said the building houses some of the city’s most vulnerable, including some with drug addictions, and inspections of things like fire alarms and extinguishers hadn’t been carried out.
He’s reminding building owners that it is their responsibility to hire professionals to make sure their equipment is up-to-date and know the fire code.
