THUNDER BAY – A South Edward Street apartment owner has pleaded guilty to five counts of violating the fire code in Provincial Offences Court.
The charges were laid for not testing various fire safety systems in the apartment building.
The owner was fined $800 per count for a total of $4,000, plus victim fine surcharge and costs. The charge stems from a June 2018 inspection.
“A landlord is responsible for carrying out the provisions of the fire code. Monthly and annual checks must be completed and records must be kept,” said fire chief John Hay.
Failing to test and inspect fire and life safety systems can result with a fine of up to $50,000 for individuals and $100,000 for corporations.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue reminds residents that if you live in an apartment building with a fire alarm system, then the landlord should be conducting monthly and annual tests. For more information, residents are encouraged to visit: www.thunderbay.ca/fire.
