THUNDER BAY - Three people who fled from Ontario Provincial Police on Friday night tried to escape arrest by taking a side road, but police kept up the chase and apprehended them within hours.

According to the OPP, the driver of an eastbound grey Mercedes initially failed to stop for police on Highway 17 near Ignace.

Thunder Bay OPP detachment officers later spotted the vehicle travelling at high speed near the Highway 11/17 junction at Shabaqua, only to lose sight of it a short time later.

When other officers to the east of that location failed to spot the car, police surmised that the driver had taken a back road to avoid them.

Just after midnight on Saturday morning, however, OPP were successful in stopping the Mercedes near the Highway 17/Highway 102 junction at Sistonen's Corners.

The male driver was charged with failing to stop for police, while one of the two passengers was charged with possession of drugs.

In what may have been a related incident, the next day (Sunday) residents of Finmark Road, not far from the area where the arrests were made, reported seeing a suspicious grey-coloured vehicle carrying people who appeared to be looking for something in the bush.

The individuals went on their way at the request of the homeowners.

Later, officers who were dispatched to the area located a duffel bag containing firearms and drugs.

Police are continuing their investigation.
