THUNDER BAY -- A lawyer in Lindsay, Ontario is heading up a class action lawsuit against the province for cancelling the basic income pilot program.
The program provided payments to low-income to about 4,000 people in four communities including Thunder Bay.
Lawyer Mike Perry said ideally what the plaintiffs would like is that the province continues the program in place through its three-year timeline.
“Especially keeping the evaluation component, so we can get the data and the facts and figures we need from the work,” Perry said.
“If that happens, if the minister announces that she will continue the basic income study then my plaintiffs have said they will discontinue the lawsuit.”
Perry said should the court approve the class action and open the class to the other participants, then there will be a public notice for people, including those in Thunder Bay, on how to join the class.
