The community will have the opportunity to leave its mark on Habitat for Humanity’s new build.

Habitat for Humanity Thunder Bay joined presenting sponsor Kristana Leger of Re/Max First Choice Realty Friday afternoon to sign and personalize the first stud in a ceremony to kick off Habitat’s first ever stud-a-thon.

This new event allows teams to sponsor 2x4 or 2x6 studs, which will give the community an opportunity to not only raise money for Habitat but make a lasting and personal impression on Habitat for Humanity’s 28th home.

“I like the idea of putting positive messages on the framework of the home,” Leger said during the ceremony. “That’s the bones of the house that keeps it together, so when I heard the concept I thought that was a fantastic idea.”

On September 17, the Restore will host a community gathering where the sponsors will have the opportunity to personalize and decorate their studs.

Once the studs are decorated and personalized they will be sent to the build site for construction to begin.

Fund development coordinator Amber Prairie said she’s hoping to see messages for the family written on the studs.

“This year we are going to be building a handicap accessible home,” Amber said. “It’s a really special home for the community and I think it would be really nice for the family to see some wishes on the studs.”

Amber added that the family is aware of the stud-a-thon and they are excited to see what will be written.

“They love it,” she said. “They think it’s going to be really cool to see what people draw and when the house is frame they want to be able to walk through the house and see all the messages before the drywall goes up.”

Amber said there is no set goal to how much they are looking to raise, the money fundraised will be donated to this year’s house and the money left over will go toward next year’s build.

Studs are $25 for 2x4 or $50 for a 2x6.
