THUNDER BAY -- A 55-year-old man is in custody after a peaceful conclusion to a 19-hour standoff at a North Syndicate Avenue residence.
Thunder Bay Police on Wednesday night said their negotiation team at 6:57 p.m. succeeded in convincing the suspect to surrender to tactical officers who had surrounded the home after a domestic dispute got out of hand.
Police, in a release issued on Wednesday evening, said they received a call at about 10 p.m. on Tuesday from a distraught female, advising her father was out of control in the home. The first arriving officer observed a male standing in the front doorway holding a gun, leading subsequently arriving officers to contain the area for the safety of the public.
Shortly afterward the suspect allowed his teenaged daughters to leave the home, along with the family pets. Meanwhile his wife escaped through a second-story window onto a rooftop, where officers encouraged her to jump. Police on scene broke her fall and removed the woman to safety.
Negotiations, aided by the arrival of the emergency tactical unit, began immediately, but were not initially successful in convincing the suspect to surrender.
The man, who remains in police custody was charged with possession of a dangerous weapon. He will appear in court on Thursday, but police say they will not name the man in order to protect the identity and privacy of the victim in the incident.
The Criminal Investigation Branch is continuing this investigation and the residence will be secured by police awaiting the approval of a search warrant to enter the house.
The 400 block of Syndicate Avenue North is now open.
