THUNDER BAY -- The Local Health Integration Network will be taking on another responsibility at the end of the month.

The Northern Diabetes Health Network handled funding for the some of the city’s diabetes programs, but after Nov. 30 that responsibility will be passed on to the North West LHIN.

The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care notified the NDHN in September that the province was terminating its funding agreement.

But regardless where the funding comes from, Tracy Buckler, President and CEO St. Joseph's Care Group, said it will be business as usual for patients with diabetes.

“From a health-care perspective, we wanted to make sure our clients would continue to get the care and service they require and that’s what we’ve been assured of,” Buckler said.

“We carry on. The funding will flow from the North West LHIN. We’re not anticipating any interruptions in service.”

She added that the operating budget for the Diabetes Health Thunder Bay is $1.2 million annually and employs about 12 full-time equivalents.

The NDHN has provided its services across the province for nearly 20 years and has contributed to a number of developments for patients with diabetes.

In a message posted on the NDHN website, the board members issued a statement that said they reluctantly accept the ministry’s decision and will work on a wind-up plan before the organization dissolves.
