Local librarians are getting out of the stacks and into the community to teach people what the library is all about.
The Library on the Loose campaign, which kicked off Wednesday morning at Intercity Shopping Centre, will last roughly three months and hit more than a dozen community events. Sporting uncharacteristically loud green shirts, library staff are trying to reach out to people in Thunder Bay to let them know what the local resource is all about.
“It entails just having library staff go out into the community, talking to people on the street, visiting local businesses and just getting out and talking to people,” public service librarian Lindsey Long said.
“And find out what can the library do for you. Why are you not coming to the library? If you are coming to the library what do you enjoy or what can we do to change?”
They also want to partner with local businesses in an effort to work together.
“We’re hoping that it will get more people into the library,” Long said.
The four branches have everything from free internet to CDs to DVDs available. There are also audiobooks and free e-books available to download at the virtual library (http://www.tbpl.ca) .
That’s on top of the thousands of books ready to be read.
“Our collection just keeps growing,” Long said.
