THUNDER BAY -- EarthCare Thunder Bay is teaming up with EcoSuperior for a Litter Cleanup Day in the parkland/shoreline at Marina Park on Sleeping Giant Parkway. The clean-up will take place from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on Sunday, Aug. 15 and be headquartered near the Marina Office. PPE and collection bags will be provided to participants.

Researchers estimate that roughly 10 million kilograms of plastics enter the Great Lakes every year, polluting the lakes and their surrounding watersheds. Research on plastic pollution pathways and long-term environmental impacts is evolving rapidly, and microplastics pose a great danger.

“Many of EcoSuperior's community clean-ups have shifted to a citizen science focus where we ask residents about the litter they find, to learn about plastic and other litter issues in our community,” said Melissa Davidson, Program Coordinator at EcoSuperior. are very excited about the SeaBin that was placed in Thunder Bay's harbor last year, as it's another valuable tool for collecting data about plastics entering Lake Superior. ”

Information will be available at these displays:

· City of Thunder Bay - EarthCare - learn about the SeaBin!
· EcoSuperior - Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup
· Lakehead University - Great Lakes Plastic Cleanup
