THUNDER BAY – The number of people admitted to Thunder Bay’s regional hospital with COVID-19 has again risen above 50, for the first time in nearly two weeks.

The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre reported 51 COVID-positive patients in hospital as of Wednesday, up from 48 the day before.

It’s the first time since Feb. 3 the number has bumped back over the 50 mark, after hitting a peak of 59 on Feb. 1.

Of those admitted with COVID-19, 11 people were in the Intensive Care Unit, down by one.

The TBRHSC has warned it isn’t yet able to resume less urgent medical procedures, as allowed by the province last week, “due to the continuing trend of the high number of positive COVID-19 cases.”

The TBRHSC did not provide data on how many of those hospitalized with COVID-19 were admitted due to the virus, as opposed to being admitted for another reason and incidentally testing positive.

In the past, the hospital has reported the majority of its COVID patients were admitted due to the virus, and that the unvaccinated make up a disproportionate proportion of those receiving intensive care.

The hospital reported its medical/surgical occupancy at 106.1 per cent Wednesday, and ICU occupancy at 77.3 per cent.
