THUNDER BAY – A local dental office plans to give away $1,000 a month for 10 months to an individual or family in need, or an organization that has been supporting the community during the pandemic.

Dr. Derval Clarke, owner of Sovereign Dental, said he and his staff have been lucky enough to remain open during most of the past year, deemed an essential service, but know not everyone has been as fortunate.

“Many people in our community— our family, friends, neighbours and organizations have all been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and we want to help. Sovereign Dental has been fortunate enough to continue working throughout the lockdown as an essential service, so our team feels it’s essential to give back,” Clarke said in a release issued earlier this week.

Clarke and his staff are encouraging anyone in the public to nominate someone they think might need a helping hand because of COVID-19, or might be in need. The only condition is they must live in either Thunder Bay or Nipigon, where the two communities where his practice is located.

“We want to create beautiful smiles and it doesn’t have to be in a dentist chair,” continues Clarke. “There’s something about the power of a smile that can change everything, not only for you, but for someone else. Share the power of a smile. When you’re smiling the whole community wants to smile with you,” Clarke said.

Recipients of the prize will be announced the last Monday of every month, starting on April 26.
