THUNDER BAY -- A unveiling Friday at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Center is energizing the entire hospital.

A new heat and power plant has been built on site to help provide for the facility's needs. Its an $8.3 million project which is not only going to pay for itself but will also make a difference to the environment. The new Combined Heat and Power plant, will generate enough to save the hospital over 16,000 megawatt hours annually.

The Independent Electricity Systems Operator assigned Thunder Bay Hydro a six year target to save just over 48 thousand megawatt hours. This project alone covers 30 percent of that. It also uses the heat generated by the natural gas motor to heat the hospital through water.

Current backup generators can provide 40 per cent of the hospital's electricity needs, this plant ups that to 80 per cent.
