A Thunder Bay man serving time for a murder-for-hire plot has died in prison.

Damiano Cosmo Valente, 69, was arrested in 2007 on two counts of counsel to commit murder.  He was convicted two years later based on testimony from a police informant and an undercover police officer.

The intended victims were Valente's estranged wife and her lawyer.

Valente was serving a five-year and eight-month sentence at Stony Mountain penitentiary in Manitoba.

Officials with the Correctional Service of Canada say Valente died Monday at a hospital in Winnipeg, and his next of kin have been notified.

In all cases where a person dies while in custody, police and the coroner are brought in.

The correctional service will also review the circumstances surrounding Velante's death.
