THUNDER BAY— The Thunder Bay Rowing Club is starting the season with a new coach.
Fresh from New Zealand, head coach Hasan Pathan welcomes high school students with a new program at the local rowing club.
“This new high school program is essentially reigniting something that hasn't happened at the rowing club for quite a while,” said Pathan.
“It's trying to bring in younger rowers,” he said. “It is such a phenomenal waterway, and we would like to provide the experience for a lot of our youth to get out onto the water, and then also experience the beauty of rowing."
The program isn’t just for fun, the high school aged rowers will compete in mid-June to wrap up their season.
"It's been decades since we've had a program focused just on high school athletes and we're hoping to see more students come out to get on the water and train for the high school races," said Vince Rutter, President of the TBRC.
In addition to the new high school program, the local club will continue to provide their all ages Learn To Row program and multiple competitive programs for well seasoned athletes.
