Local Toys 'R' Us location will miss Christmas shopping season

THUNDER BAY -- The city will not have a Toys 'R' Us store before Christmas.

The store was announced back in May by Toronto-based developer Jennum Properties Inc. Company spokesperson Toby Singlehurst had said they planned to have the 35,000-square foot store at the Thunder Centre ready to open in time for the Christmas shopping season.

Singlehurst confirmed that the local location will not open until the spring, likely sometime in May.

Singlehurst said delays in getting approvals from the city's development department pushed back their starting date.

The store was built by Horne Construction out of Burlington, Ont.

Horne spokesperson Ian DiChiaro said the outer shell is almost complete, and they're getting ready to turn the building over to Toys 'R' Us to complete the interior work.

No one from the company was available for comment.

Toys "R" Us operates nearly 70 stores in Canada, and more than 800 outlets in the United States.
