Local youth bowlers win national honours

Three bowlers from the Mario’s youth program took part in the Canadian Tenpin Federation Youth National Championships.

It was a rewarding weekend at the Canadian Tenpin Federation (CTF) Youth National Championships. Three bowlers from the Mario’s youth program joined bowlers from Sault Ste. Marie as part of team Northern Ontario in Winnipeg, May 20-22.  Mikayla Davidson (bantam girl's division – up to age 11), Maya Graham (junior girl's division – ages 12-14) and Trenton Martyn (intermediate boy's division – age 15-17) won their provincial crowns in April.

The CTF youth nationals consists of three events competed over three days starting with the team event (boys and girls teams), mixed doubles event on Day 2 with the single's event being the third and final day.

Day 1 was a bit of a struggle for both the boys and girls teams, but Day 2 brought the first medal for our local bowlers. Trenton Martyn winning the bronze medal in the mixed doubles with his Intermediate partner Ema Bowen from Sault Ste. Marie.  The win came in a tie-breaker with Trenton needing two strikes in the 10th frame to secure the medal.

Day 3 belonged to Maya Graham, winning the silver medal in the junior girls singles and also securing the bronze medal for the junior girls all-events (total pinfall for all three days combined) in her first national competition.

Mikayla Davidson finished fourth place in the bantam girls singles, just missing the podium by one matchplay win.

Graham will be competing in her next national competition in July along with fellow Mario’s youth league member Avery Wilson (bantam girl) in the Youth Bowl Canada (YBC) National Championship being held July 10-12 at their home lanes, Mario’s Bowl.

Trenton Martyn also has one more big event in the near future as he will be competing in the Teen Masters event in Detroit, MI at the end of July.
