The town of Nipigon is in mourning following the tragic death of their longtime fire chief.
Roy Cross died Saturday night following a single-vehicle accident on Highway 11-17, just west of Nipigon.
Cross had been Nipigon's fire chief since 2001, overseeing the town's 30 volunteer firefighters.
He had just received special recognition earlier this month to mark his three decades of service on the Nipigon Fire Department.
The flags throughout the town are now flying at half mast in honour of the chief, who was considered to be a pillar of the community. Mayor Richard Harvey said Cross's sudden passing leaves a huge void for Nipigon.
Nipigon OPP continue to investigate the fatal crash.
Roy Cross was 63 years old.
