THUNDER BAY— Magnus Theatre celebrated the achievement of their newest studio theatre last week with members of the community and local artists at their Sip, Savour and Support event.
“(The night) is about recognizing the people that helped us get to this point, where we're almost ready to open the studio theatre,” said Thom Currie, Magnus Theatre's artistic director.
The event is a part of Magnus Theatre's Curtain Call campaign, where the theatre hosts events in efforts to raise money for refurbishing and upgrading the facility.
“The most exciting part is this room, the enhancements we've done, the dressing rooms, the production shop, all those things have been amazing,” said Currie.
The studio theatre is located in the 1884 Central Schoolhouse portion of the building. A full renovation was done to make the studio theatre come alive.
Additionally, Magnus has expanded the production shop by 30 feet allowing for the building, storage and maintenance of sets for performances. The lounge also went through accessibility renovations, said Alexis Rowlinson, executive director.
The goal for financial assistance is not far in the distance for the studio theatre addition.
“We've done really well; we raised over $5 million towards it so far. We still have a million dollars to go, so we are really hoping the community can help take us to that point,” she said.
“We just want that audience to artist connection, and that's what this is going to be all about,” said Currie.
The new studio theatre will welcome its first production in October of 2025.
