THUNDER BAY – The Magnus Theatre Young Company presents The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui starting Friday.
The play is the iconic political satire by Bertolt Brecht. Performances will be held on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. on the Magnus Theatre stage.
Directed by Jordan Blaxill, director of theatre in education, this bold production has been in development since September.
Set in 1930s Chicago, the play follows the ruthless ascent of fictional gangster Arturo Ui, who manipulates fear, violence, and propaganda to seize control of the city’s vegetable trade. Originally written as an allegory for Adolf Hitler’s rise to power, the play remains relevant today, offering a chilling and thought-provoking exploration of ambition, corruption, and the fragility of democracy.
This production not only brings Brecht’s message to life but also showcases the talent of Thunder Bay’s next generation of performers.
“The young artists in this company have tackled Brecht’s work with incredible maturity and commitment,” said Blaxill, in a news release. “This is not an easy play - it asks difficult questions about power, responsibility, and complicity. The cast has embraced these challenges head-on, and their work is bold, thoughtful, and necessary. I could not be prouder of what they've created.”
