A major multi-vehicle crash on the Thunder Bay Expressway sent two people to the hospital, one with potentially life-threatening injuries.

The crash involving a pickup truck and a mid-sized car happened sometime after 8:30 p.m. Monday on the Expressway between Red River Road and John Street. The driver of the truck, who did not give his name, said he hit a patch of black ice while traveling down the highway toward John Street and slid into the opposite lane.

The resulting crash left the front end of the truck smashed in and forced the other car into the nearby ditch.

Superior North EMS Superintendent Eric Todd said there were two main vehicles involved in the crash, with a third receiving “a glancing blow.”

“There were four patients at the scene,” Todd said. “We assessed everybody and treated as required. Two were taken to the (Thunder Bay) Regional Health Sciences Centre by two separate ambulances. One (sustained) potentially life-threatening injuries and the other one had minor injuries. It’s good thing that no one died in this, or more vehicles were involved.”

Thunder Bay Fire and Rescue Capt. Kelly Patterson said they had to use the Jaws of Life in order to get the driver of one of the vehicles out of the car.

He added that the OPP will be conducting an investigation and traffic on the Expressway will be limited for some time.
