THUNDER BAY -- The suspect charged in a gruesome July 2013 murder case has been committed to stand trial.

Justice Dino DiGiuseppe ruled there is sufficient evidence to proceed on the charge of second-degree murder for the death of Shannon Ashliegh Marie Hogan against the male suspect, who can’t be named because he was a youth when the alleged offence occurred

The Thunder Bay Courthouse courtroom was packed Tuesday with many relatives of the victim attending to hear the ruling. There was also a significant police presence in the courtroom, with at least five uniformed officers scattered throughout the room, many near exits and the prisoner’s box.

Hogan, 30, was killed in a violent incident in a laneway behind Lake Street in the early morning hours of July 16, 2013.

Thunder Bay Police Service officials then said she was involved in the sex trade.

Police arrested and charged the suspect, who is now 19, in December 2013 after he was already in custody on other charges.

At that time police said forensic evidence played a factor in making the arrest.

A publication ban was previously introduced on all evidence, which remains in effect.

None of the charges have been proven in court.
