SCHREIBER, Ont. -- A man who allegedly raced along the North Shore highway in a stolen vehicle after a gas theft has been arrested by provincial police following a search that involved the closure of Highway 17.
The OPP were called at about 6:30 a.m. Thursday after reports of theft of gas from a Highway 17 gas station in White River, with a black Dodge Charger seen heading westbound.
The vehicle was then observed about 90 minutes later heading westbound just west of Terrace Bay at a high rate of speed. Police did not initiate a pursuit at that time.
Just after 10 a.m. the vehicle was found on a side road west of Schreiber after a search involving the OPP's emergency response team, K-9 unit and helicopter.
About half an hour later, the male driver of the vehicle was located and arrested without incident after breaking into a nearby camp. The vehicle was determined to be stolen.
The suspect, who police are attempting to identify, has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, theft under $5,000, as well as break and enter.
Highway 17 was closed for a portion of the morning while the search was ongoing. It has since been reopened.
