Man charged in fatal highway crash

A 48-year-old Thunder Bay man has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death in connection to a fatal collision on Highway 61.

THUNDER BAY - A Thunder Bay man has been charged following an investigation into a fatal collision on Highway 61 that occurred in early January.

Ontario Provincial Police have charged 48-year-old, Gary Walker, with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm.

On Jan. 6, 2017, emergency officials responded to a three-vehicle collision on the Kaministiquia River Bridge on Highway 61.

The collision claimed the life of 45-year-old, Rachel Legarde of Fort William First Nation.

An investigation determined a dark-coloured sport utility vehicle (SUV) was travelling southbound on Highway 61. A light coloured SUV was also travelling southbound behind the dark-coloured SUV. A mid-sized grey car, driven by Legarde, was travelling northbound and was struck by the dark-coloured SUV on the Kaministiquia River Bridge. Following the impact, the light coloured SUV also collided with the grey car.

A female driver in the light coloured SUV, a passenger in the mid-sized car, and Walker were all transported to hospital with serious injuries.

Walker is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Thunder Bay on Apr. 7, 2017.
