DEVLIN, Ont. – A Fort Frances man has died after an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) broke through the ice on Lake Despair, about 30 kilometres to the northwest.
Friends initially located the man, who was 70 years of age, after becoming concerned he had not returned Thursday night. The man was deceased when he was discovered, police said.
Ontario Provincial Police responded to the incident shortly before 11 p.m., and were assisted in recovery efforts by members of the Northwest Region Emergency Response Team. A post-mortem examination has been ordered by the coroner.
In a release Friday, police reminded the public to use caution if they decided to use frozen waterways, with ice conditions quickly deteriorating.
“The OPP is recommending that members of the public strongly consider if the activity is absolutely necessary,” the release stated.
