THUNDER BAY — Police have arrested a 35-year-old man following a stand-off at a Cumberland Street motel on Wednesday.
Tyson Stanley Spence, 35, of Thunder Bay was arrested following a weapons call police responded to on Wednesday, March 17, at a local motel.
In a news release issued on Thursday, March 18, police say officers were called to a motel in the 400-block of North Cumberland Street shortly after 6 p.m. for an assault that had just occurred.
Spence appeared in bail court on Thursday where he was remanded into custody until April 8 at the request of his lawyer.
When police arrived, they learned a male had assaulted a female victim inside a motel room. The female was able to exit the room following the assault but police learned the man may have been in possession of a handgun, the release said.
A stand-off between the man and police ensued as the man ignored police instructions to exit the motel.
After a two hour stand-off, the man exited the room and waved an object at police stating it was a knife. Police say he made demands for police to use their firearms.
Police completed their arrest after a brief struggle and a taser was discharged to complete the arrest.
Spence is charged with assault, assault with a weapon, mischief under $5,000, resisting a peace officer, failure to comply with a judicial release, and uttering threats.
Crown counsel also requested for Spence to have no contact or communication with the complainant.
Spence also faces unrelated break and enter charges from 2019.
Spence was previously convicted of aggravated assault in 2017 for assaulting a 63-year-old man for which he was sentenced to two years in jail.
