Man seriously injured in weapons incident that led to standoff

A man suffered serious injuries in a weapons incident Friday afternoon, which prompted a police standoff on Cumming Street later that day.

THUNDER BAY – A man who showed up at hospital on Friday afternoon with serious injuries triggered a standoff in the city's south end.

Police remain on scene on Saturday afternoon outside a Cumming Street residence, where police were dispatched following an alleged weapons incident.

The man's injuries, sustained in the incident, are not believed to be life-threatening, police said in a statement released on Saturday.

Officers were first notified of a possible incident involving a firearm just after 3 p.m., the force reported, after an injured adult male attended the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for treatment.

An investigation led police to a residential address in the 200 block of Cumming Street, where at least half a dozen police vehicles surrounded a home around 4 p.m. Friday.

Numerous officers in tactical gear attended the scene, with at least one officer pointing a weapon at a house.

Police efforts to secure the scene and identify persons involved did not conclude until around 10:30 p.m. Friday.

An investigation involving the major crimes unit is ongoing. There is no known concern for public safety in connection with this incident, police say, though officers continue to hold a scene in the area.

Cumming Street, which was blocked at May Street and at McKenzie Street Friday night, was reopened around midnight.
