THUNDER BAY -- A St. Patrick's Square resident was treated for carbon monoxide exposure as a result of burning incense in his apartment early Sunday morning.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to reports of a fire alarm at 2:15 a.m. When firefighters arrived, they discovered it was a carbon monoxide alarm.
The lone male resident of a main floor apartment was taken to hospital as a precaution and released by morning.
Firefighters determined the occupant burning "some type of incense" was the cause of the carbon monoxide.
"The occupant was advised not to continue this practice in the future," Thunder Bay Fire Rescue said in a release.
"There can be no doubt that the carbon monoxide alarm in this incident saved the occupant from serious injury or worse."
District chief John Doughty added the occupant used a method to burn the incense that caused it to burn very hot and very quickly.
Fire chief John Hay issued a reminder carbon monoxide alarms must be legally installed adjacent to each sleeping area of the home.
