Man wants emergency broadcast station for city

There could soon be a new community information and emergency broadcast radio station hitting the airwaves in Thunder Bay. At least that's what one city resident is hoping for.

There could soon be a new community information and emergency broadcast radio station hitting the airwaves in Thunder Bay. At least that's what one city resident is hoping for.

Bob Seed has received the green light for a broadcast signal from Industry Canada. He's now seeking $20,000 annually from city council to cover the operating costs. He said in addition to being a source for information during emergencies, it would also offer weather forecasts, road reports and community event information.

Similar stations are already up and running in a handful of other cities, but city council turned down Seed's initial request for funding last year.

At the time city administration said a tourism information radio signal is already in place, operated free of charge by Dougall Media, the organization that owns this website.

As well both the police and fire chiefs said  existing broadcasters around the city provide adequate and timely emergency messaging whenever it's required.

Seed said he's received support for his proposal from the Regional Hospital and the Red Cross and he hopes to have the new station up and running by the fall.
