Hogarth Riverview Manor will have its final expansion complete as early as fall 2016.
In December 2015, the first phase of the 262,000 square foot Hogarth Riverview Manor expansion was complete.
All of the residents from the former Dawson Court and Algoma Street were moved out of the building and into the largest long-term care home in Ontario at the beginning of January.
The Manor’s vice-president of infrastructure and planning, Scott Potts, said construction has moved onto its final stage of adding 32 long-term care beds to the 96 beds at the existing Hogarth Riverview Manor.
“This is happening through two additional wings,” Potts said Friday at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
“A south wing and a west wing to the facility, so it makes all the resident home areas at Hogarth Riverview Manor 32 beds.”
Potts added that both add-ons are framed in, roofing is near completion along with the mechanical and electrical roughing.
“We just met with a contractor this week and they are confirming a fall of 2016 completion date,” Potts said. “We are monitoring that closely to make sure we can hit those targets.”
Once construction is complete the move will begin as early as December for the residents to that facility, if there is any delay residents will be moved in sometime in January.
With Bethammi Nursing home staying open there will be an increase in close to 150 long-term care beds in the community as a result of these projects.
“I think this will improve the flow and the access of people to long-term care,” he said.
“It’s been a long-standing problem, it has created lots of issues with respect to overcapacity in both St. Joe’s Hospital and the Thunder Bay Regional Sciences Centre.”
He added that the additional beds should do a lot to relieve some of the pressures.
