MARATHON, Ont. -- A piece of this Northern Ontario town’s history came crumbling down Monday.
Residents watched Monday as the iconic smoke stack at the former Marathon Pulp Mill site was demolished.
While it's sad to see the past disappear, Mayor Rick Dumas says this also presents a new opportunity for the town’s future.
“We are in dialogue with companies to setup a shop on that site,” Dumas said during an interview with CFNO Radio. “As you know, we did have to go through with the (demolition) and cleanup first and so that is the priority.”
The mayor added that they hope to have a better understanding of what could fill the now vacant site sometime in 2016.
